Men, women, and paint colors
Lori Berglund
I realized recently just how much Dad loved Mom. Just how wrapped around her little finger he must have been... way back when they were first married in the 1950s... before I, their fifth, came along. Before he learned, as all husbands do, how to ignore her. (Bill Cosby calls it ‘The Gift’ and maintains that all husbands receive it eventually, but that’s another story.)
I realized this great love of Dad’s when I saw some old pictures of our house from those years.
"Wow," I said to Mom as I looked at the pictures, "Dad must have really loved you a lot back then."
And she just smiled, remembering the power.
It was the paint colors, you see, that gave him away. No man in his right mind would paint a dining room "Flamingo Pink," but that's just what this otherwise reasonable man had done way back when as a newlywed.
Preserving the Mother Tongue

An unexpected turn of the foot

“Nothing ever is; everything is becoming.”
Very deep, we thought. We would have to go home and ponder that awhile.
And ponder I did.
