Webster City Police today are looking for a black man who allegedly threatened a clerk with a handgun in an armed robbery at Kum and Go overnight.
The suspect was described by police as a black male, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and red bandanna.
The man apparently entered the Kum and Go at 1102 Second St. at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, showed the handgun and demanded cash. The suspect then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
In a surveillance video, the suspect is seen pointing the gun at the clerk as he held it high in front of him. The entire robbery took only seconds as the clerk quickly emptied the cash drawer and gave it to the armed man. The caliber of the gun is not known at this time, but may have been a .22. Sources also indicate that he made off with less than $300 in cash.
The clerk was not injured and immediately called 911 to report the armed robbery.
An armed robbery is extremely rare in Hamilton County. Police Chief Mike McConnell estimated that the last one occurred about four to five years ago when a knife was used in an attack. The use of a gun in a robbery is even more rare in Hamilton County. However, robbery was a possible motive a few years ago in a rural Hamilton County murder.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Webster City Police at 832-9166.
