Hog farms take a hit near Williams, Blairsburg

The farmers gathered at these sites had some huge and messy jobs in front of them, and yet their moods were good. Their spirits heartened by the friends and neighbors who had come to help.
“This is not a loss," said Carroll Ose, who was missing an entire machine shed at an Ose hog farm southeast of Blairsburg.
Remnants of the building were scattered across the farm and into adjacent fields. Part of it even landed on a nearby building, damaging that building's roof. Damage was also reported to a well and the farm's feed system, but those repairs were being quickly made as family, friends, and neighbors gathered to help.
At the Wayne Anderson farm, south of Williams, the devastation was even greater. Two large hog buildings were completely destroyed at the 7,200-head hog facility. But, like Ose, Allen Anderson was smiling through it all and grateful for the large outpouring of help to clean up the mess.
As with the Ose site, remnants of the building were scattered across nearby fields. But here, parts of the two buildings also collapsed, trapping many feeder pigs inside. Volunteers on Thursday were crawling through the rubble to get the hogs out and loaded on to semis trailers.
Others hogs were simply roaming the countryside, finding some lunch in corn fields that are far, far behind their normal growth for this time in June. And, with mud holes everywhere, more hogs were simply wallowing in the mud, enjoying their time outdoors.
Surprisingly, Allen Anderson said a relatively small number of hogs were killed or injured in the storm.
The storm that rolled through Wednesday night hit Kamrar, downing a number of trees and knocking out power to much of the community.
