Hamilton County will have a new member of the Century Club later this week when Bertha Doolittle turns 100 years old on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Doolittle was born and raised in Webster City and is best known for her involvement with two local organizations - first in her work life at the Credit Bureau of Hamilton County, and then in retirement as a volunteer who helped bring Congregate Meals to the community.
It was in the early 1980s that Doolittle visited a sister in Newton and learned of the senior meal program available in that community. When she came back to Webster City, she was determined to make the same services available here.
Today, Congregate Meals is a vibrant part of the community, offering seniors a chance to enjoy the company of their own generation and enjoy a healthy, delicious meal, at the same time.
Doolittle, herself, enjoyed getting out to share a meal with friends well up into her 90s.
Doolittle has one son, Doug, and will mark her birthday quietly at Crestview Senior Living, where she is now a resident.
