CARROLL - Mission accomplished.

Looking to see how it stacked up against another Class 3A ranked team, the No. 12 Webster City boys' cross country team one-upped No. 10 Spencer on Saturday at the Carroll Kuemper Invitational.

Behind top 10 finishes from Ben Lambert and Matt Severe, the Lynx tallied 74 points to finish second against a field of eight other teams at Swan Lake. Spencer was third with 99.

Urbandale - eighth-ranked in 4A - took home the boys' title convincingly with 29 points.

"It was another great day for the boys," Webster City head coach Tony Bussan said. "Our goal was to defeat 10th-ranked Spencer and we achieved that goal."

Lambert, the 23rd-ranked individual in 3A, seized the bronze medal with a time of 17 minutes 22 seconds. It was the second straight meet in which the senior finished third.

Severe also matched his spot from last week's Ballard Invitational by placing ninth in 18:15. Alex Lamp (18:27) gave Webster City 13th-place points, Mason Powers (18:29) was 16th and Mason Hedeen (19:33) raced across the finish line in 33rd.

Hedeen's run earned praise from Bussan.

"Mason deserves great credit for hanging in as our (No.) 5 despite being out of school much of the week with the flu," he said.

Lynx girls fifth

Competing without No. 1 runner Mikaela Pruismann, the Webster City girls' cross country team notched 152 points to finish fifth at the Kuemper Invite.

Pruismann was withheld due to a lingering ankle injury that has only grown more agitated in recent races.

Paige Bonjour took over at the front of the Lynx pack and placed 22nd in 17:54. Sarah Perin surged into the No. 2 slot and finished 27th in 18:10.

The Lynx third and fourth waves of runners came in simultaneously. Alicia Long and Caitlyn Finucan turned in matching times of 18:31 to place 33rd and 34th. Erin Hunt and Bailey Bergman were both three seconds in back of their teammates, picking up 36th- and 37th-place results.

Breanne Wagner, a mainstay at the front of the Lynx pack in recent years, struggled with a leg ailment and finished 45th in 19:03.

"We will most likely have to rest (Wagner) just as we did Mikaela," Bussan said. "They will have to be healthy for us to move forward as a squad."

Class 4A fourth-ranked Urbandale captured the girls' crown with 29 points. Harlan - third-ranked in 3A - was second with 52.
