ELDORA - Round 1 went to Webster City. Nevada came back and took Round 2. As for Round 3, that will be decided on an even bigger stage later this month.

Behind top 10 finishes from Ben Lambert, Alex Lamp and Mason Powers, the Class 3A 12th-ranked Webster City boys' cross country team scored 59 points and placed second on Saturday at the South Hardin Cross Country Invitational held at Pine Lakes State Park. Unranked Nevada stole the show and took home the team title with 42 points.

The Lynx owned an earlier win over Nevada back at the Ballard Invitational last month. The two will meet again at a 3A district meet held in Pella on Oct. 23.

"We had a quality effort throughout our lineup," Webster City head coach Tony Bussan said. "(The Pella district) will be one of the deeper districts, (but) I am encouraged by the fact that we have beaten Nevada once and had a close race with them (on Saturday)."

BCLUW settled for third with 66. East Marshall was well back in fourth with 102.

Lambert, a senior, set a strong pace early and led the race over the middle portion. But he eventually fell back to fourth in a time of 17 minutes 24 seconds.

Dane McDonald of BCLUW earned the win in 17:00, four seconds ahead of AGWSR's Parker Drake. Tom Peterson of Nevada was third.

Lamp made a strong surge during the second mile and he took Powers with him, as they placed eighth and ninth overall. Lamp sprinted across the finish line in 17:52, six seconds ahead of Powers.

Matt Severe also nudged his way into the top 20 for the Lynx, as the junior slipped into the 17th slot in 18:22. Mason Hedeen took over the fifth spot for the team; he placed 28th in 19:13.

Lynx girls 6th

Short-handed for a third straight meet, the Webster City girls' cross country team moved back to sixth in the team standings at Saturday's South Hardin Invitational.

The Lynx competed without Mikaela Pruismann, Paige Bonjour and Breanne Wagner - the three girls who were expected to be the team leaders at the start of the season - due to injury.

Bailey Bergman, Alicia Long and Erin Hunt picked up the slack, as all three placed in the top 30 to help Webster City tally 154 points.

New Hampton stood atop the standings with 44 points. BCLUW was second with 86, followed by South Hardin with 122.

Bergman was the first Lynx runner to finish, as she took 24th in 17:03. Long was 27th in 17:21 and Hunt finished 29th in 17:27.

Sarah Perin sat just outside the top 30. The Webster City junior raced into the final chute in 31st with a time of 17:28.

"Our top four from this meet have consistently given us very good efforts in recent weeks," Bussan said "They have provided a dependable core group."

Caitlyn Finucan was the fifth Lynx runner to finish. She was 44th in 18:09.

North Tama's Sara Stoakes ran away with the individual crown. She finished in 14:33, 24 seconds ahead of runner-up Kate Price of Iowa Falls-Alden.

Webster City has just one meet this week at Fort Dodge on Thursday before it will attempt to defend its North Central Conference title in Webster City next week. Bussan knows his crew has a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.

"We continue to face on-going health issues which prevent us from running our expected varsity lineup," he said. "The meet at Fort Dodge on Thursday will be extremely important in determining our lineup for conference, as we expect all squad members to be participating in the meet."
