FORT DODGE - Don't look at the standings. Look at the times. Then you'll see what Tony Bussan sees.

Bussan, Webster City's cross country coach, couldn't have been happier following his boys' team's performance on Thursday at the Fort Dodge Invitational. Facing a field that featured six Class 4A ranked teams and another in the 3A top 15, the Lynx put up 236 points to finish 10th in the 13-team field.

West Des Moines Valley (4A No. 4) hoisted the championship trophy after finishing with 63 points, 34 points ahead of runner-up Urbandale (4A No. 7). Indianola (4A No. 3) was third with 104, Ankeny (4A No. 11) took fourth with 125 and Waukee (4A No. 8) rounded out the top five with 148.

That 10th-place result the Lynx put up suddenly doesn't look too bad. Dig deeper and discover that Boone (3A No. 9) placed 12th, marking the first time Webster City has topped the Toreadors this season.

"The boys had another great race," Bussan said. "This performance shows that we come to compete every day."

Ben Lambert continued to set the pace for the Lynx, as the senior had the best race of his career en route to a 14th-place finish in 16 minutes 30 seconds. Alex Lamp set a personal record as well, sprinting down the homestretch and across the finish line in 17:17 to settle into the 41st-place spot.

But Webster City was far from done.

Freshman Mason Powers was 47th in 17:25, another PR, and he was the third rookie to finish the race. Colin Ryan (18:46, 75th) set a PR as well.

Matt Severe gave Webster City a 59th-place result in 18:00 and Mason Hedeen rounded out the squad in 19:18, good for 81st.

The tough competition and solid performance couldn't have come at a better time, as the Lynx will host the North Central Conference meet on Tuesday.

"The conference features a large number of ranked teams and several top individuals, (and) I believe we will be ready to put on a good show for the home folks," Bussan said.

Lynx girls back in 12th

Back at full strength for the first time in more than two weeks, the Webster City girls' cross country team attempted to bolster its confidence on Thursday at the Fort Dodge Invitational. Bussan thinks the team succeeded.

"It was good to have the entire squad back (and) the performance represents an improvement over recent meets for the team," Bussan said after the Lynx scored 345 points to place 12th overall. "With the conference meet coming up, it was very encouraging."

Mikaela Pruismann resumed her role as the leader of the pack, as the junior finished 55th in 17:04. Sarah Perin was the next Webster City runner to finish, strolling through in 17:39 to place 69th.

Alicia Long (17:46, 71st), Bailey Bergman (17:54, 74th) and Caitlyn Finucan (17:57, 76th) rounded out Webster City's scoring five.

The Lynx will go for broke on Tuesday at the NCC meet where they will attempt to defend the crown that they have owned for the last two years. Pruismann is also the defending individual champion.

"I believe we will see the girls best race of the year on the home course (at conference)," Bussan said.
