PELLA - Thirteen proved to be unlucky for the Webster City boys' cross country team on Thursday, but the squad did pick up a nice pair of consolation prizes - individual state-meet berths for senior Ben Lambert and freshman Mason Powers.

The Lynx were unable to break through the wall of ranked teams in front of them, as they finished fourth at a Class 3A district meet held on the campus of Central College. Only the top three teams advanced to next week's state meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Webster City saw its string of state-meet runs stopped at 12. The last time head coach Tony Bussan's boys' crew didn't pack up and run as a group at state was 1995.

Second-ranked Grinnell put four runners in the top 10 on its way to the team title with 42 points. Third-ranked Pella was second with 54 and No. 14 Nevada snuck into the third spot with 101, four points ahead of Webster City.

"It's going to be a little weird not taking a team to the state meet, but we did not have a bad day," Bussan said. "Nevada was just the better team and the truth of the matter is it didn't come down to one position. They beat us at three of the five positions, so they were just the better team.

"We gave it the very best run we had because we knew it would be difficult, but we feel like we have a pretty darned good cross country team that didn't back down."

The day wasn't a total loss for the Lynx, however. Lambert, a senior, and Powers, a freshman, both ensured that their seasons would continue after they placed in the top 10.

Lambert stayed steady throughout the race, just in back of the lead pack on his way to a fourth-place finish in 16 minutes 39 seconds. It was the third straight all-district performance for the team's No. 1 runner and he will end his year on the big stage for the fourth time in as many seasons.

"I'm glad to be going for four years and hopefully I can get in the top 10 this season," Lambert said. "It was a pretty good day. I would have liked to have been up there a little closer to the front, but I got cut off at the start and I was just trying to catch them."

Powers was in fifth at the one-mile mark before falling back into a pack with four Grinnell runners. He maintained his position to finish in 10th in 16:53, as he became the first rookie in the program's history to qualify for the state meet as an individual.

"I'm very happy to make it to state because I really didn't think it would happen for me," Powers said. "I knew I had to stick in the top 10 throughout the race, so I just tried to stay up there."

Bussan marveled at the performance of his freshman.

"Mason Powers' night was tremendous," he said. "To finish 10th and qualify as an individual for the state meet against this field is tremendous. He just went out from the get-go and said 'I'm running in the top 10.'

"We say one for all and all for one on this team, but we've got two, so it's certainly a proud moment for our program."

Zach Wittenburg of Pella took home the top honor in a time of 16:08, 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Tom Peterson of Nevada.

Alex Lamp placed 19th for Webster City in 17:19, Matt Severe rushed through the finish line in 33rd in 18:11, and Mason Hedeen moved in front of several competitors down the homestretch to take 39th-place in 18:42.

Colin Ryan (19:16, 50th) and Austin Elm (19:41, 63rd) also competed for Webster City.

Lynx girls unable to make a move

A season filled with frustration ended on a similar note for the Webster City girls' cross country team on Thursday on the Central College cross country course.

Looking to prove their doubters wrong, the Lynx didn't have the day they were hoping for as they finished seventh in the 3A regional field and out of the state meet for a second straight season.

Sixth-ranked Pella secured the girls' team championship with 61 points, nine points in front of silver medalist and No. 8 Benton. Knoxville claimed the third and final state meet ticket with 121, nipping Grinnell by five.

Webster City tallied 177 points.

"We came in and gave an effort, but it wasn't the season that we wanted to have," Bussan said of his girls' squad. "But it was a solid performance to wrap up the year and hopefully it's something we can build off of. Now it's up to the girls over the course of the offseason to recommit themselves to being the very best that they can be."

The dream of a top-three finish was squashed early on, as the Lynx pack fell off the pace during the first mile. But Bailey Bergman never gave in and quietly moved up throughout the race to finish in 18th-place with a time of 17:07. It was the first time this season that she led the Webster City squad home.

"That was far and away the best race of Bailey Bergman's career," Bussan said. "That's just huge for that girl. She looked strong and she ran a particularly fine final mile."

Mikaela Pruismann, a junior who ran at state in 2007, tried to stay with the front pack off the start, but she eventually fell back and placed 30th in 17:40.

Breanne Wagner (18:13) placed 41st, Caitlyn Finucan (18:17) was 42nd and Erin Hunt (18:43) took 46th to round out the Lynx scoring five.

Oskaloosa's Sam Dickinson stormed out to a big lead during the first mile and continued to add to her cushion en route to the individual title. She raced across the finish line in 14:49, 51 seconds ahead of runner-up Madison Davis of Carlisle.
