WILLIAMS - Williams will be the place to be on July 4th as the community hosts the 58th annual celebration Saturday. Thousands of spectators converge on the community each year and line the streets to watch the parade and take part in activities throughout the day.
The day will begin with the big parade at 10 a.m. Groups, businesses, and individuals wishing to take part in the parade are asked to register at the Prairie Land Co-op office before 9:30 a.m. There is no entry fee, according to organizers. Prizes will be awarded in five categories: Floats-churches and organizations; Floats-commercial; Kids--costumes and floats; Machinery, cars, and antiques; and Horses. Candy and favors may be handed out, but not tossed from parade entries.
Russ and Eleanor Anders will serve as this year's parade grand marshals.
Foot races will begin in the park at 11:15 a.m., followed by a 3-on-3 basketball tourney at noon. Pre-register for the tourney by calling, 515-854-2307.
Putt around a miniature golf course on the park court beginning at noon. The event is part of a Relay for Life benefit.
Lunch will be served in the new shelter house by the churches of the community.
Antique tractor games get underway at 2 p.m. Throughout the day, the Caruth Antique Tractor and Gas Engine display will be available, and the Hemken Collection Museum will be open from 9 to 5 on Saturday.
Kids' rides and games will be featured all afternoon in the park. The Lion Bingo games will be in full swing as will the cakewalk. Proceeds from the cakewalk will go toward the Relay for Life.
The Little Princesses Program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the park, followed by other entertainment. The Williams Lions Club will conduct a drawing for a $500 grand prize and 10 $20-prizes during the evening. Tickets will be available throughout the day, according to organizers.
The huge fireworks display will cap off the celebration at 9:45.
