WEBSTER CITY Mikaela Pruismann did what she always does at the sound of the gun, the Webster City senior sprinted off the starting line and bounced into the lead before the field of 95 runners had even reached the first incline.

It proved to be a pace too brisk for her to keep up.

But Pruismann wasn't the only Webster City girls' cross country runner to smack face-first into an invisible wall Tuesday afternoon at the Webster City Links Golf Club. Throughout the Lynx Invitational, Webster City's group of seven slowly dropped back in the field and the end result was a lower than expected fifth-place team finish with 119 points.

Humboldt rode three top 10 runners keyed by the runner-up performance of Katie Fevold in 16 minutes 34 seconds to win the girls' crown with 88 points. Boone was just five points back in second, Fort Dodge Senior High placed third with 103 and Fort Dodge St. Edmond settled for fourth with 114.

Webster City had visions on a spot in the top three when the day began, but senior Breanne Wagner says the result will only add to the team's list of motivational tools.

"Our goal was to pack up more than we did, but for the first meet it was just all right," Wagner said after placing a team-best 12th in 17:21. "But this gets us out there. We know where we are and that will just give us more motivation for the next meet."

Wagner didn't avoid the potholes either. She was firmly entrenched in the top seven until a late-race cramp pushed her back several places.

"The last half-mile I cramped, so that was upsetting because I fell back," she said. "But it's something I can work off of."

Pruismann withstood burning lungs to finish 20th in 17:47. The former North Central Conference individual champion has been limited in practice because of a lingering leg injury. Lynx head coach Tony Bussan says Pruismann will be just fine once she works back into shape.

"Mick will eventually run herself into shape," he said, referring to Pruismann. "As that leg heals then she'll be able to finish races better."

Bussan was content with what his girls' squad showed on Tuesday, but he also said the team is a long way from where it needs to be come October.

"We were very competitive with the other conference schools, but we're not quite where we need to be as a team," he said. "Still, the top five is nothing to sneeze at."

Alicia Long (18:12) and Sarah Perin (18:20) kept in close contact throughout the race, resulting in 25th- and 27th-place finishes for the Lynx. Freshman Morgan Moline (18:34) did her best to stay with her pack of teammates, as she crossed the finish line 14 seconds behind Perin in 35th.

Fort Dodge Senior's Tara Jackson won a foot race against Fevold down the homestretch to claim the individual title. Jackson sprinted into the chute with a time of 16:31.
