WAVERLY Alex Lamp cemented himself as the leader of the Webster City boys' cross country team last week. On Tuesday, he cemented himself as one of the leaders in all of central Iowa.

Lamp, a Webster City junior, won his age division and finished third overall in a time of 17 minutes in the monstrous field at the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawk Invitational. He was the lone medal winner for Webster City at the age-classification meet.

"Alex just ran a phenomenal race and I'm just really pleased with him," Webster City head coach Tony Bussan said. "This is a big-time meet, so for Alex to do this, it's a credit to him for all the hard work he put in this past summer."

Lamp and Northern University High's Terry Nielsen battled stride for stride all over the course and left the remainder of the junior field biting at their dust some 40 seconds back. Lamp held a slight edge throughout, only to watch Nielsen sprint past him with 100 meters to go. Undeterred, the Lynx runner summoned enough strength down the stretch to make the pass of Nielsen and sprint through the finish line first.

"It was just a really great race," Bussan said.

Lamp, along with Colin Ryan (28th, 20:12) and Mason Hedeen (32nd, 20:31) propelled the Lynx juniors into third with 61 points. Dubuque Hempstead owned the division with 19.

Webster City's freshman boys secured the runner-up slot behind Jacob Clabaugh's sterling fourth-place finish in 19:37. Lucas Poland (21:09) was 20th and Cory Woodhouse (22:02) was 26th, giving the Lynx 50 points. Decorah topped the field with 11 points.

Andrew Laird (13th, 19:27) was the Lynx best sophomore, and Matt Severe (14th, 18:16) anchored the senior group.

"Matt Severe had a strong race in the senior division (and) Jacob Clabaugh had an excellent freshman effort," Bussan said. "I was very pleased by the runner-up finish by our freshmen, which shows great potential for the future."

On the girls' side, Webster City failed to pick up a top 10 medal, but that doesn't mean there weren't several quality performances.

Bussan was particularly encouraged by his two senior leaders Breanne Wagner and Mikaela Pruismann. They sprinted out with the leaders early in the race and maintained their position in the top 20 throughout. Wagner crossed first in 14th in 17 minutes 4 seconds, and Pruismann sprinted through 20 seconds later in 16th.

The Lynx senior girls tallied 50 points Sarah Perin's 20th-place performance in 17:28 rounded out the scoring and placed third. Decorah swept all four of the girls' races, including the senior division with 17 points.

"Our senior girls had a good overall meet," Bussan said. "I thought they ran well as a pack (and) in particular, Breanne and Mikaela battled hard."

Brenna Paukert and Morgan Moline led the Lynx freshman group to a seventh-place result with 79 points. Paukert navigated the rookies around the course in a time of 18:01 to finish 15th. Morgan Moline secured the 22nd spot in 18:47.

Alicia Long (26th, 18:11) led the Webster City junior class, while Nicole Heinrichs (37th, 19:42) was the top sophomore.
