FORT DODGE - The game plan was sound and, more importantly, it was executed to near perfection.

Webster City junior Alex Lamp went out at the desired pace and maintained his focus throughout the boys' Class 3A race at Saturday's state cross country meet inside Kennedy Park, and the end result was an 80-place improvement over his only other state-meet performance.

Lamp sloshed his way across the finish line at a soupy Lakeside Golf Course in 17 minutes, 18 seconds to place 39th in a field of 122 competitors. He took 119th in 18:53 as a freshman in 2007.

"I was really satisfied with how I did," Lamp said following the race, one of six on a blustery and chilly afternoon. "I went out slower than I did at districts and that's what I wanted to do, so I thought it went well."

Webster City head coach Tony Bussan sent Lamp out on a mission to stick on the shoelaces of Algona runners Kyle Walker and Alex Kenne, and that's exactly what he did over the course of the 3.1-mile excursion. Walker crossed the finish line in 17:14 to place 34th, while Kenne was 38th with a time identical to that of Lamp.

"Alex followed the race plan exactly," Bussan said. "He had nothing left in the tank at the end, so he has no regrets at all."

Lamp was in 25th-place after the first and second miles, but a handful of runners were able to move past him as a massive pack sprinted down the homestretch. But Bussan says his primary goal for Lamp was achieved.

"The top 40 was our goal going in there and he achieved that," Bussan said.

With seven first-time qualifiers in the lineup, South Hamilton's first foray into the state meet field since 1996 was also a success story, head coach Jim Klein said. Happy just to gain entrance into the main event, the ninth-ranked Hawks left two teams behind and settled into 13th in the boys' 1A field.

"I think 13th is great because we were just happy to get over here," Klein said. "We had a really good year and it was a lot of fun."

Junior Keaton Hake was assigned the duty of setting the pace for South Hamilton, and the other six Hawks game planned to keep him within their sights. One problem though - in a field of 137 runners, it's easy to get lost.

"I told the guys at the starting line that we had to keep our packs together, but they got broken apart pretty good and that hurt us a little bit," Klein said. "You can't run the state meet one time and expect to know what's going on, I don't care what anybody says, but hopefully we'll get back here next year."

Hake glided across the finish line in 18:08 to secure the 52nd position.

"I wasn't really going for a place, but I felt pretty good throughout the race," Hake said afterwards. "I was hoping for my best time, and it's our first time and we're just happy to be here."

Klein said that Hake's performance was indicative of his season-long showcase.

"Keaton's gotten nothing but stronger all year and he's been our leader," Klein said. "He had a really good run (on Saturday)."

South Hamilton's second through fifth runners finished within a 22-second window. Senior Ryan Fisher (19:08) and junior Joe Mechaelsen (19:10) fed off one another and placed 96th and 97th, respectively. Arlen Burroughs (19:20), another junior, completed the course 10 seconds later to take 105th, and junior Allen Fiddelke (19:30) was another 10 seconds back in 110th.

Freshmen Zach Coster (19:46) and Jordan Lutjen (19:52) were the 118th and 119th runners to push themselves to the finish line.

Taking home the boys' team championships were Burlington (4A), Pella (3A), Spirit Lake (2A) and Iowa Mennonite (1A). It was the second straight championship for Spirit Lake, while Pella and Iowa Mennonite traded in the silver they won last fall for the gold.

North Central Conference power Algona was denied back-to-back titles in 3A; the Bulldogs settled for third behind a fourth-place result from junior Ryan McMahon and a fifth-place finish from senior Chad Rutledge.

Marshall Moyer of Burlington (4A), Brogan Austin of Boone (3A), Garret Ehlers of Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove (2A) and Bill Spencer of Iowa Mennonite (1A) claimed the individual titles.

On the girls' side, West Des Moines Dowling (4A), Dubuque Wahlert (3A), Union (2A) and Nodaway Valley (1A) were the toast of their classes. Dowling and Union both hoisted the hardware for a third consecutive time.

Dowling senior Katie Flood reclaimed her spot at the top of the large-school class. Now a three-time individual champion, she was second to teammate Ashlie Decker in 2008. Decker occupied the runner-up slot on Saturday.

Other individual girls' champions included Ali Krogman of Atlantic (3A), Morgan Casey of Northeast/East Central (2A) and Katy Moen of Wapsie Valley (1A).
